According to the ‘Which MBA?’ survey, 60% of the present business undergraduates and alumni state that the majority of b-schools are not concentrated on teaching strategies in an appropriate way and 38% of them think that they do not have sufficient competence to deal with financial matters. 80% of potential MBA students still hope that these educational institutions will take these issues seriously. The editor of ‘Which MBA?’, Bill Ridgers, claims the figures show that insufficient attention has been paid at business strategies and money issues.
The Poets & Quants reporters say that the survey overlooks the fact that 80% of potential, current and former MBA students agree with the viewpoint that b-schools give profound knowledge of basic business principles. It should be focused on the approval of the available MBA curriculum instead of criticizing teaching strategies of financial matters.
Mikolaj Jan Piskorski, an associate professor working at Harvard Business School, and some other experts doubt whether the survey is really significant. Mr. Piskorski states that there is a certain gap between schools of the UK, the USA and the rest of the globe. If the survey had been conducted in the United States, it would have brought better results. The associate professor claims that it is not an easy job to teach business strategies without putting future profits at risk and predicting rivals’ reactions. He adds that they require a businessman to have special thinking, which is impossible to be taught using textbooks.
Larry Chiagouris, a professor dealing with marketing issues at the Lubin School of Business, does not agree with Mr. Piskorski and says that the survey demonstrates real problems of many b-schools as a great number of teachers have never held a senior position in the sphere of business.
